Three Times The Reading

Lee Nailon, Jamaal Magloire and Stacey Augmon took time out on February 14 to participate in another Hornets event in the NBA's Read to Achieve program. The players organized reading stations for 100 children at the Simmons YMCA.

Nailon, Magloire and Augmon are a part of Charlotte's All-Star Reading Team that also consists of Hornets Head Coach Paul Silas, Baron Davis, Jamal Mashburn, David Wesley, Kirk Haston, Sting Head Coach Anne Donovan and Sting player Charlotte Smith.

In addition to the monthly Reading Timeouts at area YMCA's, the team recognizes one reader at every home game in conjunction with the Public Library System. The Hornets are also continuing their long-standing Books and Bugs Reading incentive program in partnership with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System, the Adult Literacy program in partnership with Central Piedmont Community College and the Tryon Hills Pre-School Reading Incentive program. The All-Star Reading Team will be featured in public service announcements to be aired locally to promote the importance of reading.

The NBA's Read to Achieve initiative is the most extensive educational outreach program in the history of professional sports. It includes the annual donation of more than 200,000 books and the creation of Reading and Learning Centers in schools and community-based organizations throughout the United States.
